25 Gifts for Electricians That Actually Get Used

25 Gifts for Electricians That Actually Get Used

Shopping for an electrician is harder than it looks. They already own the tools they rely on, they're picky about brands, and anything that doesn't earn its spot in the truck ends up in a drawer. The best gifts solve a small daily annoyance, keep them warm or comfortable, or replace something that's worn out.

We sell workwear and gifts at Hard Hat Goods, but we don't sell tools, so a lot of this list is stuff you'll find elsewhere. We've marked our own products where they genuinely fit.

A quick rule before you buy tools

Electricians are particular about hand tools, and anything used on or near live work needs to be properly rated. If you want to buy a tool, ask what they've been meaning to replace, or get a gift card to the supply house or tool store they already use. A guess that's the wrong brand or the wrong rating is worse than no tool at all.

Everyday comfort (the stuff they won't buy themselves)

  1. Good boot socks. A few pairs of merino or heavy cushioned work socks. Ask their boot height first.
  2. Knee pads. Outlets, floor boxes and crawlspaces add up. A comfortable pair gets used daily.
  3. Quality work gloves. A few spares, because gloves disappear.
  4. Hand cream for work hands. Unscented, for cracked knuckles in winter.
  5. A warm hoodie for cold rough-ins. Our Safety Orange Trade Hoodie is a heavy-blend pullover with a lined hood and front pouch, with "Built for the Trades" on the back. It's a bright work color, not a rated hi-vis garment, so it doesn't replace a vest where one's required.
  6. A beanie that fits under a hood. The Cuffed Jobsite Beanie is a snug 12-inch acrylic knit for early starts.
  7. A cap for the rest of the year. Our embroidered Trade Cap is a low-profile cotton twill dad hat with a buckle strap. If they like a structured mesh-back hat, go with the Retro Trucker.

Light and visibility

  1. A rechargeable headlamp. The most useful thing in an attic or panel with the power off.
  2. A magnetic work light. It sticks to a panel door and frees up both hands.
  3. A neck or hat-clip light. A good backup when the headlamp is on the charger.

Organization and carry

  1. A magnetic wristband. It holds screws, wire nuts and bits while they're up a ladder. It's cheap, and it gets used.
  2. Small-parts organizers. Clear-lid boxes for connectors, wire nuts and fasteners in the van.
  3. A tool backpack or tote, but only if you know what they carry now. Ask first.
  4. A canvas tote for everything that isn't tools. Our Canvas Jobsite Tote is heavy cotton canvas, 15 x 16 inches, for lunch, a laptop and permit paperwork. It isn't a tool bag.
  5. Label maker tape (in the size their label maker takes). Panel schedules use a lot of it.

Coffee, lunch and the truck

  1. A coffee mug that can live in the truck. Our Enamel Jobsite Mug holds 12 oz. Enamel is hand-wash only, and don't heat anything directly in it.
  2. A big insulated bottle or tumbler for summer attic work.
  3. A durable lunch cooler. Soft-sided ones squeeze behind the seat.
  4. Seat covers or a seat organizer for a work truck that's taking a beating.
  5. A phone mount and a spare charging cable. Boring, but useful.

Small stuff and stocking stuffers

  1. Hard hat stickers. Hard hats and toolboxes are where tradespeople show some personality. Our Hard Hat Sticker Sheet has five stickers on one glossy sheet.
  2. Pocket notebooks and good pens or markers. Measurements and circuit notes still get written down.
  3. A reference guide or code book tab set, if they're studying for a license. Ask which code cycle their area uses.

Bigger gifts

  1. Exam prep or continuing-ed course fees for an apprentice working toward journeyman, or a journeyman going for master. It's one of the most appreciated gifts there is.
  2. A gift set, so you don't have to guess. The Cold Morning Gift Box puts the Safety Orange hoodie, the cuffed beanie and a sticker sheet in one order; all you pick is the hoodie size. For a smaller budget, the Coffee & Cap Pack (mug + cap) or the Jobsite Starter Pack (tee + cap) are easy wins. Bundled items can arrive in separate packages.

What to skip

  • Random tools from a big-box endcap. They'll probably duplicate something or be the wrong brand.
  • "Hi-vis" anything that isn't actually rated, if it's meant to be worn where a rated garment is required. Bright colors are great off the clock or on jobs that don't require ratings, but they aren't PPE.
  • Gag gifts with no use. A funny sticker is fine. A desk toy just gets tossed.

Buying for an apprentice?

New apprentices usually need everything and can afford little of it. Gloves, knee pads, a headlamp and a warm layer are all safe bets. If you're buying for several apprentices or a whole crew, our Crew Tee 3-Pack is our best price per shirt. All three tees come in the color and size you pick.
